CALGARY - Team Alberta opened up the 2019 WHL Cup with a 7-3 win over Team Manitoba.
Alberta came out strong with four straight goals in the first from Kaiden Ellertson, Billal Noori, Jaren Brinson and Jordan Gustafson, before Manitoba answered back late in the period.
Tyler MacKenzie scored to open the second, and Noori added his second of the game, while Manitoba scored another late goal on the powerplay, giving Alberta a 6-2 lead heading into the third.
Josh Davies gave Alberta a 7-2 lead halfway through the third, and Manitoba answered again for a 7-3 final.
Alberta out-shot Manitoba 37-19, with Justen Maric making 19 stops to earn the win. Nate Danielson earned Player of the Game honours for Alberta.
"I thought we did a lot of really good things, we played hard," said Head Coach Brandin Cote. "The habits were there at times, but we’re going to keep working at that. Our powerplay scored some goals, and we got some key saves at certain times in the game, which was nice to have. We’re really happy about the effort, so now we just have to build on that and be even better tomorrow."
