RED DEER – Hockey Alberta has cancelled the 2021 Alberta Cup, Alberta Challenge and Prospects Cup.
The decision was made after a review of current Government of Alberta restrictions regarding youth sports, and an evaluation of priority areas pertaining to Team Alberta programming.
As a result, Hockey Alberta will focus on planning High Performance Camps to select its Team Alberta U18 Female and U16 Male squads. These teams will represent the province at Hockey Canada’s U18 Female national championship, and the WHL Cup in the fall. Currently, those events remain scheduled for their normal time frame – October for the WHL Cup, and early November for the U18 Nationals.
The evaluation and selection process for the Team Alberta squads will be different than in previous years. While the format has not been finalized, the following tentative camp dates have been set – subject to Government of Alberta COVID-19 restrictions allowing for meaningful competition to occur.
- 2006-born males eligible for the Alberta Cup and WHL Cup – tentative dates for selection camps are July 6-11, August 3-8, and September 17-19.
- 2004- and 2005-born females eligible for the U18 Nationals – tentative dates for selection camps are July 13-18, August 10-15, and September 24-26.
- All camps would be held in Red Deer.
In addition, Hockey Alberta is planning to offer development camps for athletes who would have been eligible for the Alberta Challenge and Prospects Cup.
For 2006- and 2007-born female players (Alberta Challenge), the tentative timeframe for this program is July 26-August 1. For 2008-born male players (Prospects Cup), skill development sessions are also being planned. More details about these development opportunities will be provided as they are confirmed.
