Zone 5 Male & Zone 2 Female Win Gold At 2014 Alberta Winter Games

Zone 5 Male and the Zone 2 Female hockey team captured gold medals Sunday at the 2014 Alberta Winter Games.

Male Results:

Bronze Medal Game – Zone 2 (6) vs. Zone 6 (5)

Gold Medal Game – Zone 5 (6) vs. Zone 3 (0)

The teams were determined through zone selection camps in early December. Athletes born in 2001 were eligible to try out for the opportunity to be one of 20 athletes to represent their zone.

Female Results:

Bronze Medal Game – Zone 3 (1) vs. Zone 6 (5)

Gold Medal Game – Zone 2 (4) vs. Zone 5 (0)

The teams were determined through zone selection camps November 29 to December 1. Athletes born from 1999 - 2002 were eligible to try out. After the event, 60 athletes are invited to attend the Team Alberta U16 Female summer development camp.

About the Games

The Alberta Winter Games take place every two years. The 2014 Alberta Winter Games run from February 6-9^th. Young athletes from eight zones will participate in 22 sporting competitions in both locations. The Alberta Winter Games give athletes aged 11 to 17 the opportunity to participate in a multi-sport environment, much like the Olympics. For many of the selected athletes this will be their first taste of provincial level competition.

The 2014 Alberta Winter Games is the largest event to be held jointly by the two communities of Banff and Canmore and certainly one of the legacies of these games is this new relationship in the spirit of sport and co-operation.

Hockey Alberta and the Hockey Alberta Foundation announced Thursday the candidates that will be inducted into the Alberta Hockey Hall of Fame (AHHF) for 2014.

“This is a special time of year for the AHHF Selection Committee - we have the opportunity to look over and remember the significant contributions to our sport in Alberta, Canada and beyond,” said Scott Robinson, executive director of the Hockey Alberta Foundation. “It’s our honour to recognize these inductees. Their legacies and accomplishments can now take their place Alberta’s hockey history.”

The following four individuals and team were chosen by the Alberta Hockey Hall of Fame selection committee to enter the Alberta Hockey Hall of Fame in 2014:

Inductees:

- Bill Moores (Achievement Category)

- Gord Hira (Builder Category)

- Jim Fleming (Builder Category)

- LeRoy Johnson (Builder Category)

- 1994 Olds Grizzlys (Achievement Category)

These inductees were chosen from nominations based on select criteria. Nominees must have lived in Alberta for at least five years, must have personal and/or professional accomplishments in the game of hockey, must have made an impact in the game beyond a local or regional level and must have received other significant recognitions. Nominations could be made for either an individual or team, active or retired.

The AHHF gallery is located within the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame and Museum in Red Deer. The AHHF gallery is designed to preserve and celebrate Alberta’s hockey history. Items that are on display date back to those first days of Hockey, including old jerseys, autographed photographs and other items. The Hall of Fame maintains legacies of professional and amateur hockey in Alberta for people to enjoy forever.

2014’s inductees were recognized at the Hockey Alberta Awards Gala on Saturday, June 7, 2014 at the Westin Hotel in Edmonton, Alberta.
